Central to any religion is a religious pilgrimage in the footsteps of God. Like amongst Hindus, Char Dham Yatra is the basis of being a devotee and attaining Moksha the final journey of the pure.

In four different directions lie the abodes of God in India. Hence visiting all four revered places which represent incarnations of Lord Vishnu is the lifetime aim of a devout Hindu. The four places for Char Dham Yatra (Pilgrimage to four religious sites) are Badrinath, Puri, Dwarka and Rameshwaram in Southern India. The four cardinal points were collated by Saint Adi Shankaracharya. It is a pilgrimage circuit that would ultimately unify people across whole of the country in name of Hinduism.

Temple at Badrinath
Badrinath temple is situated in Uttrakhand state in Chamoli District in Northern India in hills of Garhwal on the banks of river Alaknanda. The mountain ranges are Nar and Narayan shadowed by Nilkantha Peak at height of 6000 plus meters. It was Adi Shankaracharya who established the temple here and is amongst the four important places of holy pilgrimage for the Hindus. Badrinath on Tibet border is a two day long journey from Kedarnath. On way to Badrinath is Hemkund Sahib holy place of the Sikhs.

Gangotri – Temple of Goddess Ganga
Gangotri on Bhagirathi/Ganga river is a small town of intense importance to Hindus as holy Ganga descended upon earth here at source called Gau Mukh. The river source at Gau Mukh is eighteen kilometers of adventurous trek from Gangotri. Hence it is among the four holy places to make a pilgrimage also known as Char Dham Yatra or the holy pilgrimage to four holy places in India.

Places of interest is Bhavishya Badri temple about seventeen kms from Gangotri. The statue of Lord Narshimhan is enshrined in this temple.

Bhagirathi Shila holy stnes near Ganga temple the spot where Ganga descended upon Earth through matted locks of Lord Shiva.

Journey to Kedarnath Temple
The temple enshrines on of the twelve Jyotirlings of Lord Shiva on River Mandakini. The temple has specific opening and closing times and is the holiest pilgrim place of the Hindus.

Reaching Kedarnath: By steep 14 km trek on a constructed path one can also hire horses and palanquins at Gaurikund, Another way to reach Kedarnath is by a helicopter from Agastyamuni by Pawan Hans Helicopter Service.

Shrine at Sri Yamunotri Dham
Yamunotri is the source of River Yamuna at Himalayas in Garhwal region. It resides on height of about 3600 plus meters on Bandar Poonch Peak opposite Gangotri. The source of the river is a frozen lake at Champasar glacier about one kilometer at height of 4400 plus MSL. Since accessibility is difficult the shrine has been located at the foot of the hill. Yamunotri is a full day journey from main towns of Uttrakhand – Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun the capital.

A 13 km walk from Hanuman Chatti town and 6 kmr walk from Janki Chatti town takes you to the temple. For old pilgrims horses or palanquins are available.
