Haridwar |
The
holy city of Haridwar is situated
in Uttranchal district of India.
It name means the gate of the God.
It is regarded as one of the seven holiest places
of the Hindus in India. From the Gangotri Glacier,
the holy Ganga enters into Indo-Gangetic
Plain at Haridwar hence the ancient name
Ganga Dwar.
As per Hindu mythology Hardwar is one of the four
places where the elixir of immortality was accidentally
spilled after Samudra Manthan. Hence Kumbh Mela
is held at Haridwar in turn with other three places
after twelve years.
The most sacred ghat at Hardwar is the Brahma Kund
at Har ki Pauri the spot where elixir fell. The
ritual bath here is considered to be washing away
one's sins to attain Moksha. Evening prayer is held
Hari-ki-pauri popular for footprint
of Lord Vishnu on stone wall. This pilgrimage spot
was constructed by King Vikramaditya if first century
BC. He built the holy ghat in memory of his brother
Bhrithari.
In the ancient scriptures it has been named as Kapilsthan
after sage Kapila who had his ashram here. Other
names are Gangadwar and Mayapuri. The holy city
is the point of entrance for the four holy pilgrimage
centers of Hindus namely Kedarnath, Gangotri, Badrinath
and Yamunotri.
In modern times Haridwar is not only a center for
religious pilgrimage it is emerging as a major industrial
town as well. It is a major cultural center and
for learning science and arts. It is the main hub
of Ayurvedic medicine and herbal remedy. The famous
Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya with its ancient
Vedic teaching system is situated here. |

Haridwar
district has an area of 2360 km² and is situated
at the height of 249.7 MSL. The population is approximately
three lakhs. Temperature:

Winter Temp: 6°C - 16.6°C
Haridwar is a railhead and connected by NH 58 between
New Delhi and Mana pass. Many buses ply from all
major towns nearby. Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun
is the nearest airport.
